Shift Yachts’ new SHIFT 54+ puts sailing performance, weight control and electrical autonomy ahead of the maximum-volume formula that has shaped much of the cruising-catamaran market.
The new design comes from Shift Yachts founder Paul Hakes and is aimed squarely at owners who still want a cruising catamaran to be rewarding under sail. The “plus” refers both to its package of design ideas and, according to the builder, an additional three feet of usable length when the transoms are lowered.
Rather than treating interior volume and cabin count as the starting point, Shift has worked outwards from the sailing platform. The result is a 54-foot catamaran built around centralised mass, long wave-piercing bows, a powerful rig and systems intended to remain understandable away from the dock.
Weight where it matters
The mast is positioned well aft and paired with deep asymmetric daggerboards. The rudders sit at the transoms and are angled six degrees outboard, a geometry intended to maintain grip as the boat heels and loads rise. Forward and aft compartments are deliberately kept clear to concentrate mass near the centre of the yacht, reducing pitching in a seaway.
Shift specifies carbon for the mast, boom, longeron and crossbeams. The rotating mast is designed to simplify reefing off the wind and to contribute lift when rotated to windward. The yard says this combination should allow the boat to retain useful performance even when sailing conservatively with a reef in.
Electrical autonomy without a black box
The energy package centres on more than 4 kW of solar generation and a 43 kWh battery bank that Shift describes as solid-state. Refrigeration, air conditioning, winches and most domestic loads run natively at 48 V DC; only the cooktop and washing machine require inverter power.
A diesel engine can be paired with hybrid drive for quiet electric propulsion and up to 4 kW of hydro-generation while sailing. High-output alternators or the hybrid generators can recharge at up to 10 kW. The approach to control is notably restrained: major systems use conventional analogue breakers, with digital switching reserved for lighting and lighter 24 V circuits.
Space rather than cabin count
Inside, the emphasis shifts to circulation, sightlines and craftsmanship. Deep seating, timber veneers, hand-finished surfaces and generous headroom replace the pressure to fit in another cabin. Shift’s opening door system is described as more than 300 kg lighter than a conventional glazed arrangement and can open the saloon to the full-beam cockpit in under two minutes.
The cockpit is designed to move between sailing, dining and lounging duties. Twin wheels can pivot inboard for more sheltered steering, while the two-person helm seats convert to aft-facing loungers. A separate seating area forward of the mast adds another outdoor space without filling in the trampoline.

A focused proposition
The SHIFT 54+ is a deliberate answer to cruising cats designed primarily around volume. Its appeal will ultimately be measured on the water, but the proposition is coherent: keep weight out of the ends, preserve the hardware and feedback sailors value, use electrical capacity intelligently and make the accommodation feel generous without turning the yacht into an apartment block.
